I pack my suitcase and take with me: ✓ Painkillers ✓ Ointment ✓ Plasters ✓ Sunscreen ➤ The perfect first-aid kit for your trip

Whether you want to relax alone on the beach, plan a city trip with your friends, go skiing with the family or go hiking in the mountains with your partner - you should always have a solid travel partner with you: Your first-aid kit. Hardly any other travel companion can save you as much stress and worry as this little companion.

Actually, holidays are meant to be a time to relax and forget your everyday problems, but often your body will put a spoke in your wheel and make you ill. According to Statista (statistics on the most common holiday illnesses), accidents, colds, sunburns and gastrointestinal infections are among the most common complaints during holidays. Most of the time, this is no reason to worry, because the symptoms do not last long and the discomfort passes quickly - if you have the right medication in your luggage. That's why we at Sonnen-Apotheke are happy to show you what you should always take with you on your trip, what you should take with you in addition to the basic equipment and what other precautions you can take.

Basic travel first aid kit: The basic equipment for every trip

Good preparation is essential if you want to embark on an adventure. Buying medicines on the road is often difficult: the medicines are not available abroad, the billing with the health insurance company causes complications or the effect is different from what you are used to. It is therefore easier to buy everything you need beforehand and stow it comfortably in your suitcase. In any case, you should always take the following products with you:

  • Bandages & accessories
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Medication

The first-aid kit should always contain sticking plasters, quick bandages, elastic bandages, gauze, disinfectant and blister plasters. It is also a good idea to carry a clinical thermometer in a shatterproof case, as well as small scissors and tweezers to cut the bandages or remove insects, splinters and other foreign bodies. For insect repellent, we recommend either a mosquito repellent with a high DEET content (such as Nobite) or Bayrepel (such as Autan) or a herbal product (such as Viticks-Cool). When it comes to sun protection, you should always choose a sunscreen with a high UV-A and UV-B factor (such as Ladival) and also pack sunglasses and a head covering.

Basic travel first-aid kit: The standard medicines for every trip.

This basic equipment must of course be supplemented with the necessary medicines to complete the perfect first-aid kit. According to a survey (statistics on the contents of a first-aid kit) on the contents of German first-aid kits, painkillers and healing ointments are the most frequently taken on holiday, in addition to plasters and bandages. Other important holiday medicines are:

  • Medicines for pain and fever (such as paracetamol or aspirin)
  • Medicines for diarrhoea (such as Tannacomp or Imodium acute)
  • Products for treating wounds (such as Octenisept or Bepanthen)
  • Tablets for travel sickness (such as Vomex lozenges or Superpep)
  • Preparations against fungal infections (such as Canesten or Lamisil)
  • Articles for insect bites (such as Fenistil gel), sunburn (such as Bepanthen foam spray), colds (such as Otrivenspray), hay fever (such as Lorano) and allergies (such as Zyrtec).

All-round travel first-aid kit: Additional equipment for longer trips

The time of travel, the duration of travel, the style of travel and individual needs also influence the contents of your first-aid kit. If you have booked a package tour to Majorca, you naturally need to take fewer precautions than a backpacker in Panama or an individual traveller with pre-existing conditions. Therefore, the best thing to do before you travel is to find out from the Foreign Office about the current travel and safety advice for the country in question and, if necessary, have a consultation with your doctor.

However, there are some additional items that almost always supplement the first-aid kit. These include:

  • Eye drops (such as Yxin) for non-infectious eye irritations.
  • Ear drops (like Otalgan) for discomfort after dives
  • Lozenges (like Dolo-Dobendan) for sore throats
  • Pain gel (like Mobilat) for sprains or strains
  • Chewable tablets (like Talcid or Maaloxan) for heartburn
  • Dragées (like Dulcolax) for constipation

When travelling to malaria areas, malaria prophylaxis (such as Malarone or Lariam) or, after consultation with the doctor, a broad-spectrum antibiotic can also be useful, as these products are usually more difficult or not available in other countries. In the event of an acute or chronic illness, a sufficient quantity of prescribed medication should also be taken along, as the quality and accessibility of products abroad often varies greatly. And those who suffer from water retention when sitting for long periods can purchase compression stockings for flights or journeys lasting several hours.

Last travel pharmacy tip: As a woman, remember to take adequate contraceptive protection with you on longer trips and have an extra pack of the pill prescribed if necessary.

Vaccinations & Checkups: What you can get in advance...

A complete first-aid kit is important for any holiday, but medication alone is not enough to ensure long-term carefree travel. For a short summer holiday you probably don't need to take any further precautions, but for longer or longer trips it is advisable to visit your doctor beforehand. There you will not only receive advice on a suitable first-aid kit, but you can also have a general health check. A check-up with the dentist and possibly the gynaecologist can also put your mind at rest and ease any possible travel worries.

Whether for short spontaneous holidays, family trips lasting several days or longer individual trips, there are three things you should never do without when going abroad: A good first-aid kit, adequate health insurance and complete documentation.

You can find everything you need for your first-aid kit in our pharmacy and in the table above. You usually only need to take out health insurance for longer trips, as shorter stays abroad are covered by normal health insurance. And complete documentation includes carrying all your medical passports, such as your allergy passport, your implant passport, your medication passport and your complete vaccination certificate. You can check whether you have all the necessary basic and travel vaccinations either directly at the doctor's or partly online in the vaccination status self-check ( interactive online vaccination check).

We recommend that you scan all documents in advance and carry them digitally with you in case of an emergency.

This list should only serve as inspiration and must always be individually adapted to your destination, travel duration and travel style. That's why we are happy to advise you directly on your holiday in our pharmacy, so that you can enjoy your trip relaxed and carefree.

In contrast to the AVP, the usual RRP is a recommendation from the manufacturer.
